Teams play for the Challenge Cup when the current holder hosts a home game, and the winner of the day becomes the new holder of the Cup. The holder at the end of the season gets engraved on the Cup and holds it over until the next year.
The Ghosts defeated the Barbarians on the weekend and secured the Challenge Cup until our next home game (against Albies on July 2), where the cup will again be contested.
During the first half of the game the Ghosts played some fast running rugby with Beau Orchard scoring the first try after breaking the Baa Baas defence from about 40m out and scoring on the sideline.
Twelve minutes later Tony Dittman stepped past four Baa Baas defenders and scored a try that was successfully converted by Beau Orchard.
Luke Spooner made a break down the sideline and offloaded for a try to be scored by Pat Keen, who was fresh off the bench, in the 24th minute of the game.
Baa Baas finally turned up to play some rugby and successfully converted two tries in the last seven minutes of the half, leaving the half time score at 23-14.
Only one try apiece was scored in the second half of the game, both early in the half, and neither converted.
It was a tight contest, with the final score of the match being 37-22. The Ghosts took the win on penalties, with Beau Orchard successfully kicking five penalty goals (15 points) throughout the game. The last three of these were the only points put on the board in the last 15 minutes of the game.
Players’ Player for Guyra was Tony Dittman, with points also going to Beau Orchard (3), Tony Dittman (2) and Dan Brown (1).
This weekend we play Armidale Blues at their home ground, Moran Oval. We have previously played the Blues twice in Guyra defeating them 20-10 in round four and 46-5 in round nine.
Hopefully a good crowd of Ghosts supporters will stifle the home ground advantage, so come along and support the Ghosts. Kick off is at 3pm.
