With all the measuring, mapping, consultation and paperwork complete the Ben Lomond Rural Fire Service was ready for a pile burn and training run with the new electric reel recently fitted to the Ben Lomond Rural Fire Service truck. Early signs indicated that the weather might hinder the operational plans, but the date and time were left open to ‘wait and see.’

The valuable new piece of equipment has been donated by RFSA (Rural Fire Service Association) and was fitted in the workshop by Guyra Shire Council. The electric reel is similar to the equipment farmers and graziers use on their own properties to control weeds and is a timely addition to the fire-fighting equipment available to the Ben Lomond RFS team.
As the weather closed in and long awaited rain postponed the burn, a mandatory truck check was completed and we moved on to a more leisurely barbecue lunch and the other business of the day.
RFS Zone Manager Superintendent Steve Mepham and Group Officer Denis Saunders AFSM were in attendance on the day to talk with members. They performed a more formal role, presenting service medals for a combined total of 100 years of service contributed by three members. John Every (50 years of service), Dorothy Every (30 years of service) and Don Stride (20 years of service) were presented with medals on the day. We offer them our sincere thanks for their years of volunteer service to the RFS and the Ben Lomond community.
Members and landholder will be advised of the alternate date for the active pile burn. As many as possible should attend to familiarise themselves with the procedures and the new equipment.
