But in the blink of an eye, the home side put on two tries to level the game and foreshadow what was to come for the rest of the day.
From that point on it was a tit for tat affair and although the Spuds didn’t hit the front until well into the second half, they were on top when it counted.
Scores were locked at 28-all at the break and 40-all with only a few minutes to play.
A wide shift to the left wing found Fletcher Strong in space and he sprinted over with two minutes on the clock to hand the Spuds an upset 46-40 victory.
Mark Walker, Alister Faulkner and John Boy Quinlan all bagged try doubles, while new recruit Jack Wythes was man of the match on his Spuds debut.
Earlier in the day the reserve grade also went try for try at times, but the Hawks did enough to skip clear early in the second half and a late Spuds fight-back wasn’t enough as Inverell took it out 40-30.
This weekend the Super Spuds face their first big trip of the year when they head to Moree to take on the Boars.
