After winning the toss, Guyra elected to bat and early wickets had them on the back foot. A late order partnership between BJ Kliendienst (27) and Adrian Cameron (24) saw Guyra reach 96 runs on the unpredictable wicket.
It was always going to be a difficult total to defend, but the bowlers put Guyra within reach of a win. Charlie Keen was the best with the ball taking 4 for 28, while BJ Kliendienst (2 for 20), BJ Cameron (1 for 16) and Peter Presnell (1 for 20) also bowled well.
Guyra were in the game right until the end, with City eventually hitting the winning runs in the 37th over.
In the other game played in Armidale, Guyra had a win against Easts.
Easts batted first, and in what was another low scoring game, finished their overs with just 86 runs on the board.
DJ Patterson (4 for 17) and Zac Atkin (4 for 4) were the main destroyers.
In reply, Guyra only needed until the 14th over to take the win. Openers Jake Brazier (27) and DJ Patterson (30) started the ball rolling and Guyra lost their first wicket at 65.
They passed the opposition’s score for the loss of just three wickets and a good win.
In the other third grade game, Ollera got off to a shaky start against Hillgrove at the Guyra Sporting Complex.
After losing early wickets Jack Kliendienst, coming in at number five, put together a good knock of 74 and newcomer to the team, Daniel Boyd also batted well to finish with 49.
Ollera’s total of 175 put them in a winnable position, and the challenge was now up to the bowlers to keep the Hillgrove batting order in check.
Once again the result went down to the wire, with Hillgrove batting out their overs to finish the day at 4 for 166.
Tim Stace (1 for 19), Wayne Smith (1 for 29), Tom Smith (1 for 34) and Bill Munsie (1 for 27) shared the wickets.
This weekend Second grade take on TAS on the Guyra Turf, Ollera will play TAS Blue at the Sporting Complex and Guyra Thirds will return to Elizabeth Park to take on Ex Services.
