But trainer Joe Cleary was "pinching himself" after the richest win of his career when War Jet ran away with the $250,000 Magic Millions Country Cup (1200 metres) on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

It was almost a Queanbeyan-Canberra double after Nick Olive's Single Gaze finished second in the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) to $4 favourite Mahuta.

Cleary said it was a "bit surreal" as a well as there being a "sense of relief" after he set the son of War Pass for the race four months ago.

It's been a huge 12 months for the colourful Queanbeyan trainer, who teamed up with one of Australia's richest men, Gerry Harvey, to guide Landlocked to four straight country cups, including the listed Wagga Cup (2000m).

But a few years ago, after the equine influenza outbreak, he was only training two horses and was working as a baggage handler at the airport.

He was contemplating giving the game away.

"It's always good when a plan comes to fruition," Cleary said. "I'm just a little Aussie battler from Queanbeyan doing my best here on the big scene.

"I've got to pinch myself really to see the success I've had in the past 12 months, where I was three or four years ago to where I am today.

"I was disheartened with the game, I was ready to walk away, I was a baggage handler at Qantas when [equine influenza] came along ... and now the rest is history."

Cleary will set the five-year-old gelding for the listed National Sprint (1400m) at Canberra's Thoroughbred Park on Black Opal Stakes Day in March.

He will give War Jet a few days in the paddock and the Sprint may be his first run back.

Cleary said Landlocked would head to the Bega Cup (1600m) in February before having a tilt at the listed $200,000 Canberra Cup (2000m).

Olive said Single Gaze's run at the $10 million Magic Millions meet reinforced his thoughts she was looking to run a mile, and possibly further.

He'll look for a 1600m race for the Not A Single Doubt filly in Sydney then push on into the autumn carnival.

"I'll have a look for a mile race," Olive said. "She's just crying out for that ground and hopefully head for some longer races over the autumn carnival in Sydney.

"I have got it in the back of my mind to give her a go at the [group 1 Australian] Oaks [(2400m) at Randwick in April], but we'll just see.

"It's a big difference between running a mile and 2000m and so forth."

Olive also had a winner at Queanbeyan on Saturday with Belleedie saluting in the maiden handicap (1200m), which formed part of a running double for jockey Richie Bensley.
