Second Grade took on DK last Saturday. Guyra haven’t been able to beat this side all year, with a loss and a draw in our previous matches. The winner would also claim second spot on the ladder and cement in a home semi-final, so there was a lot to play for.

Guyra has been working on combination plays and passes and keeping possession at training. We were able to effectively play the ball and pass and move well. It was the possession that kept Guyra on the down side. Our touches seemed to be one foot too far in front and we were losing the ball a little too much.
DK were most dangerous in their crosses. And this is where the first goal came from, a cross from a penalty which swung into the left side of the goal.
Mason Harman was having a great game in defence. He was able to effectively use his body to turn the DK players away shutting down a lot of play. Guyra had their opportunities as per usual but we just weren’t able to finish our goals which was really hurting us.
DK slotted another goal in before half time leaving us down 2-0. As usual, we started half time talk with the negatives. There wasn’t a lot of this though, because we had been playing a very good soccer match.
I decided to mix up the field a little and put players where they don’t usually play. This wasn’t changing the whole structure, just a few players. I moved big solid Troy Martin to the backs, the blistering speed of Vinnie Abayan to left half and the subtle yet fiery play of Jayson Rumming to centre midfield.
From the start of the second half this seemed to work very well. From the very first play we almost scored. Moments after this, Mason Harman made a superb run from the backs. A few passes were played and the ball again eventually found Mason where he slotted it past the keeper to leave Guyra down 2-1.
This formation was working superbly for Guyra. Play only broke down when subs were made and the formation was broken. Fatigue is a harsh thing! Guyra played well for this half and I was proud of how well we knocked the ball around!
A last opportunity for DK came when an appalling referee decision was made which gave DK a dot shot, leaving them up 3-1. It’s fair to say as a referee myself, I do not like to be put down on the field, but I wasn’t at all happy with the decisions made on Saturday, which did leave Guyra down as penalty count went heavily against Guyra.
Hoping we can pick up the win this Saturday at home against TAS. We will play DK again in two weeks to make the grand final. I am 100% confident we will come away with the win then!!
Please come to support heart for little Caspers this weekend!!! All games will be played at our main fields this weekend. Juniors and seniors will be wearing red socks to support this fundraiser.
Juniors and parents are also encouraged to stick around to watch our final round game of the season before finals to support the fundraiser and make it a good club day out! We hope to see everyone there!
