The Guyra branch of Can Assist received the highest donation of $1,205 and they currently have 65 account holders who have nominated to support them.
Other groups to receive substantial donations were Guyra VRA Rescue Squad $1,016 (31 supporters), Guyra United Soccer Club $890 (19 supporters) Guyra Bowling & Recreation Club $789 (11 supporters) and Guyra Central School P & C $625 (26 supporters).
There are currently 25 Community organisations registered for the scheme. Members are able to nominate their preferred organisaton and at the end of the financial year the Community Mutual Group makes a donation at NO COST to the member. The payment is calculated at 1% of the average annual balances of accounts held by supporters.
Dane O’Connor New England Mutual’s Area Manager said that while it comes at no cost to our members, they play a huge part in the program.
“To participate members need to save with a selected account, and while it’s easy to join, members are nonetheless making a huge difference in our community,” he said.
Established seven years ago, the program has grown to have thousands of supporters, with local charities reaping the benefits. “We’ve seen a huge growth in support in recent years,” Mr O’Connor explains.
“The program has grown 30% just in the last year, with over a million being dispersed to grass roots community groups since the program’s inception. Because there have been huge benefits of the program, we’ve even opened this up to our young adult and youth accounts so they can participate too.”
Mr O’Connor explains why the program has been so successful.
“Our members are able to actively play a part of making a difference locally, the program evokes such a great community spirit,” he said.
With the program being a large success New England Mutual expect the program to grow a great deal in the coming financial year.
At the end of the financial year New England Mutual calculate an average amount of the participants balance and donate 1% to the selected group, without costing the member a cent. It’s a great way of empowering communities to make their interests sustainable through the power of collaboration.
