The club’s last win was in September 2012, so it was a long time between drinks, but worth the wait.
Early tries from Britt Youman grubber kicks to Kia Blair and Tara Mendes set up a 10-nil lead before Inverell hit back to make it 10-6 at halftime.
The Hawks then took a 12-10 lead early in the second half, but the Spudettes have come home with a wet sail in their past two games and did so again.
After hammering the Inverell line without success Guyra finally regained the lead when Bea Roberts touched down.
That seemed to give the Spudettes a boost and they played their best football in the last few minutes and finished with an 18-12 win when Blair scored her second with two minutes on the clock.
She was voted players’ player, Taylor Waters scored three club points for a strong effort, Roberts polled two and Mendes one.
The first grade clash was a different story as the undefeated Hawks showed why they are heavy favourites to win the title this year.
A big and quick Hawks side ran riot in an 80-4 win.
The Spuds were desperately undermanned, with only one on the bench and some key men missing due to injury and unavailability, and it showed.
There were a few positive moments, such as Nesi Puta’s second half try, but it was another steep learning curve for the Spuds.
Blake Handebo was a standout.
He was players’ player and won three club points, while two points went to Puta and one to Orron Surawski.
This weekend both sides head up the highway to Glen Innes to tackle the Magpies.
The Spuds will welcome back some key players and will train tonight at the sports complex from 6pm.
