Around 250 people attended the farewell for the popular Priest, with the Church filled to capacity for the Sunday service, which was followed by a BBQ lunch.

Perhaps best known for his unique talent for ‘lighting up’ with fireworks and Christmas Lights, he became Citizen of the Year in 2012 recognising his contribution to the town. 

He is also actively involved in the Rotary Club and acted as Police Chaplin for the region, receiving a commendation for outstanding service. 

Father Anthony is well liked by all denominations which was evident by the wide cross section of people in attendance at his farewell. 

A petition which was launched to try to keep him in Guyra was signed by more than 300 people.

A raffle was held to raise funds to help Father Anthony and his dog Cracker on their way. The prize was a statue of St Francis, donated by The Old Convent Gardens, and was won by Vince Mackson who now has a permanent reminder of Holysmoke in his garden.

He will conduct his last service on Sunday before taking up his new posting.

 The petition which was delivered to Bishop Michael Kennedy has been acknowledged as follows:

“I am aware of the great affection and esteem for Father Anthony, which is shared by the wider community of Guyra beyond the life of the Church.

Father Anthony is a good priest with many fine gifts and qualities which he has generously and faithfully placed at the service of the Guyra parish and community. I encourage all parishioners to carry his good work forward in cooperation with Father Antony Castelli who will be taking up his appointment in coming weeks.

It is because of Fr Koppman’s fine qualities and the great success he has achieved as Parish Priest of Guyra that I have asked him to take on the role of Parish Priest at Saint Mary’s Walgett. It is my assessment, as well as the assessment of my advisors, that he is the priest best suited for the particular needs of the Walgett parish at this time. It is now their turn to benefit from Father Anthony’s gifts and ministry.”
