The funding is part of the government’s Floodplain Management Program and would help Guyra Shire Council reduce the impact of flooding in Tingha.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said that this is good news and congratulated Guyra Shire Council on securing this funding which will reduce the impact of flooding on the Tingha community as well as reducing the public and private losses resulting from floods.

“The funding will be used specifically to assess the potential risk of flooding in the Tingha township along Copes Creek,” Mr Marshall said.

“Council will also contribute to this program am I am confident that it will result in reducing the risks associated with floodwater inundation and will also help to save lives.

“While most areas are facing drought at the moment, it is important to plan for all scenarios and flooding has the potential to destroy lives.”

Guyra Shire Mayor Hans Hietbrink said Council was very pleased to receive the funding to undertake the important study.

“As the local council we need to undertake this study so we know where the probable flood levels are to inform our current and future planning decisions for Tingha,” Cr Hietbrink said.

“We want to be able to prevent inundation into home and property and ensure that we don’t allow construction in areas which have a high risk of being inundated during floods.”
