The annual Guyra Lamb and Potato Festival got underway yesterday, centred around the town’s most famous exports but also featuring music, market stalls and a range of other attractions. Rain on the opening day did not dampen enthusiasm with organisers and stallholders expecting this year’s festival to once again pull in the crowds.

The first festival was held in 1987 in Rotary Park on the New England Highway, organised to coincide with the Tamworth festival. It was hoped travellers on their way to and back from Tamworth would stop in for a look, an idea that proved a winner and ensured the event’s longevity.
Food is available every day at the festival from 7.30am to 7.30pm. Stalls are open from 8am each day and the rail trike rides operate from 10am to 3pm. A big feature this year is the wide variety of music which has been organised, with new acts as well as some of the old favourites. This includes evening meal shows with bands playing for three hours.
The festival wraps up on January 26, with the weekend of the 24th and 25th offering a range of activities. As well as all of the above there will be the Antique Machinery Rally and Swap meet and Military Vehicle Rally on the 24th and 25th. The Car Club Show n Shine is on the 24th only. Model Train Display is sure to pull in the crowds as will the Nash Grills Talent Search with heats on the 23rd, 24th and 25th.
The festival also encompasses Guyra’s Australia Day program, including community awards, movies in the park and free entry to the local pool.
A temporary 40km and hour speed zone along the highway will be in place during the course of the festival.
