The popularity of Sporting Clays was evident with around 50 shooters competing over each of two days on October 25 and 26, 2014. Shooters travelled from the Central Coast, Mudgee, Brisbane and Quirindi as well as several local New England Clubs to compete for cash, medals and prizes.

On Saturday, shooters competed for the Northern Zone Sporting Clays Championships.
Allan Bauer, from the Central Coast Muzzle Loaders, won the Championship with a score of 94/110. Rod McCloy, (Newcastle), was first in AA Grade with 90/110 and Roger Vidal took second place with his score of 84/100.
Rob Golgini (77/100) took A Grade and Dave Pischkie was second (84/110).
B Grade went to Rick Kennedy (70/100) from Anthony Hall (68/100). Kevin Atken (57/100) won C Grade. John McKinnon took second with 55/100.
The 50 Target Skeet Challenge was won by Roger Vidal with 48/50.
The Grade results are as follows:
AA Grade 1st Dave McMillan 48/50; AA Grade 2nd Jeff Richardson 47/50;
A Grade 1st George Roth 44/50; A Grade 2nd George Golgini 43/50;
B Grade 1st Rick Kennedy 39/50; B Grade 2nd Fred McCloy 39/50;
C Grade 1st Lindsay Starkey 33/50; C Grade 2nd Fred Williams 29/50.
The Club Skeet Challenge, a teams’ event for an annual trophy, between Guyra and Central Coast Muzzle Loaders, was won by Guyra. Roger Vidal, Dave McMillan, Jeff Richardson, Ben Rumbel, Wayne Heagney and John Reid formed the team that scored 266/300. Central Coast Muzzle Loaders scored 248/300.
The New England Sporting Clays Championship was contested on Sunday with Jeff Richardson winning after a shoot off, scoring 103/113. Rod McCloy shot 102/113 in AA Grade and Alan Bauer was second with 87/100.
Shane Summers shot 87/100 and won A Grade. “Mudgee Mick” Quinlan secured second with a score of 84/109.
Bernie Mackson took B Grade, (76/100), beating Robin Elton. C Grade was won by Theresa Cameron with a score of 61/100 and Amanda Twomey was second with 67/109.
The Overall High Gun for the weekend was won by Rod McCloy from the Newcastle Club with a score of 176/200.
Alan Bauer won the AA Grade High Gun shooting 172/200.
Dave Pischke took the A Grade High Gun with 158/200.
John McCallum took B Grade shooting 143/200.
John McKinnon shot 123/200 to win the C Grade High Gun.
Fred McCloy won the Veterans’ High Gun scoring 164/200 and Amanda Twomey shot 110/200 to secure the Ladies’ High Gun.
The juniors’ prize went to Jack Roth from Kariong with 157/200.
Both Jeff Richardson and Rod McCloy were presented with 25 Break caps, always coveted in this discipline of clay target shooting.
The perpetual shield, won by a shooter who contested both the Guyra and Inverell Sporting Clays shoots in 2014, was taken by Rod McCloy with 353/400.
Major sponsorship came from Edwards Aviation, with Markus Edwards on hand to present the High Gun prizes.
Further sponsorship came from the following businesses, all having a hand in supporting the shoot: Armidale Realty – Fred Keeping; Terry Rhodes Bobcat; Graz Ag Guyra; Landmark Guyra; Super Air; Guyra Tomato Exchange. Further support came from Inverell Gun Club who lent traps for the shoot.
Please note the error in the NSWCTA “Blue Book.” The Guyra Christmas shot is to be held on Sunday, 14 December.
