Lazenby Hall at the University of New England in Armidale will be the venue for the celebration on Saturday November 8, commencing at 11:00am.
Renowned children’s entertainer, songwriter and Golden Guitar winner, Colin Buchanan, is to participate in the service alongside Archbishop Davies.
Bishop Rick Lewers said Armidale was once part of the Diocese of Grafton and Armidale, from 1863 until 1914 and earlier than that, from 1847, part of the Diocese of Newcastle. “In 1850 there was but one church building in Armidale, when the town was part of Newcastle Diocese.”
“From those small beginnings there have emerged 34 parishes with their own church buildings, as well as three schools: NEGS and TAS in Armidale, and Calrossy in Tamworth,” he said.
The Anglican Diocese of Armidale now covers the entire New England North West region, to which it also provides counselling and other services through Anglicare Northern Inland, and has sister Dioceses in Uganda and the Solomon Islands.
Past and present clergy and church members from throughout the Diocese will visit Armidale for the centenary service.
Copies of a commemorative centenary publication, On Tablelands, Slopes and Plains “I will build my church”: A History of the Anglican Diocese of Armidale will be available for purchase at the event.
Following the service, a light lunch will be served in the University grounds.
