Two Guyra boxers were among those competing and trainer Cliff Rowe said that Tremane Patterson and Kyle Mongta competed well.
The championships were held at the Casino RSM Club on Friday and Saturday, October 17 and 18 and were open to all weight and age divisions from 14 to open, for male and female competitors.
Although too young for an official title, Kyle Mongta got the better of his opponents in two spars against Ty Payne from Kingscliff and Tim McMahon from Casino. He was awarded a gold medal for his efforts.
Tremane Patterson was unlucky to finish a close second in his bout after stepping up a division. His scheduled bout against Eric Anderson of Denmark did not eventuate after his opponent withdrew.
Instead he stepped up a division, competing well over four two minute rounds to lose on a points decision. He gave away 8kg to his opponent, Levi Torrisi from Brisbane and finished with the silver medal in the super heavyweight division.
Cliff hopes to see the boys back in action in two week’s time, with the next competition scheduled for Inverell on November 3.
