The Relay for Life raised more than $37,000 for the cause, with about 920 people taking part in the 20 hour relay walk.
The biggest Guyra contingent was the ‘Guyra Cancer Crushers’ who took part under the leadership of Rebecca Williams. It was Rebecca’s second outing at the relay for life, but her first at the helm.
“I participated at the last event and this time I decided to ask a few friends to join me,” Rebecca said. “It is a great cause and what made it more enjoyable was having family and friends share the event.”
The Cancer Crushers conducted a raffle and cake stall prior to the event and managed to add around $2800 to the total raised.
A team from Guyra Central School, also entered a team to participate consisting of around 30 people.
Team leaders Mason Harman and Austin Youman said the team received tremendous support from the community and raised a large sum of money for this amazing cause.
They said all the students had a wonderful time over the night with a great number of events including the males only Miss Relay event and live music.
Most of the team camped the night at the showgrounds and spent some of their time, along with Mrs Deb Merritt and volunteers to raise funds with a toss coin/chocolate game.
A moving candle light ceremony was held on Saturday evening, including a slideshow tribute of locals who had lost their lives to cancer.
It was followed by a special fireworks display by Guyra’s Father Anthony “Holy Smoke” Koppman.
