On Saturday the 6th of September The Guyra Ghosts set out to Warialda for their last game of the season. The Gwydir River Rats decided to hold the days games at Warialda to promote the game of rugby union within the town and it proved to be a great success. In the third grade game Copper Creek stuck it to the River Rats in the closest of contests which ended in a 17 all draw.

The Ghosts 2nd grade team was without many regular players who were unable to play so it welcomed a few 1st grade players into the side. The River Rats drew first blood in the game going up 5 nil through a try out wide. The Ghosts hit back with 3 well deserved tries in the first half to go into the halftime break at 17 to 5. After halftime the River Rat’s tempo went up and they set about closing the gap. They did this through capitalising on field possession to score a few tries and lead the Ghosts 26 to 17 with roughly 15 minutes left in the game. The Ghosts weren’t worried though as they upped the tempo of their attacking game and Matt Duthie went crashing over under the sticks to close the score to a two point margin 26 -24. With the score too close for comfort and the game on the line Gwydir attacked the Guyra defensive line with renewed interest but came across solid defence. Gwydir went wide to get around the Guyra defence but an intercept was taken by Guyra’s Vernon Horne who dashed away to score under the posts. With only 3 or so minutes left on the clock Gwydir restarted with a kick off which was taken deep in Ghost territory. The clearing kick resulted in a knock on from a River Rat and from the resultant scrum in the Ghosts half they managed to produce one of their best tries all year. Jordan Burgess started it beating three defenders and burst into open space, popping the ball to Matt Duthie just before he was pulled down in a good cover tackle. Matt Duthie then powered towards the tryline committing several defenders before producing a superb long pass to team mate Brad Waters who was burning up the grass as he ran down the sideline to score a great try to finish the game and the season for the ghosts. The final score being 36 to 26 in favour of the Ghosts.
Guyra coach James Lenehan utilized his limited bench players well with strategic replacements throughout the match which lifted the team when it was needed. Thanks must go out to all the players who made the effort to travel to Warialda and play in the good spirit which they did. The 3 points for the game went to workhorse Lachlan Miller. Brad Waters snared 2 points for his clinical performance and Leroy Devine once again covered in battle blood received a point for his gutsy game. Player’s player went to Matt Duthie who had a great game in both attack and defence.
