The sounds of squealing piglets and screaming fans echoed around the Showground at the first ever Guyra Piggy Picnic Races with around 500 people turning up to find out what all the fuss was about.
The piglets, provided by nationally acclaimed “pig whisperer” Kevin Kiley from Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs, hammed it up for the crowd as they raced through around an obstacle course towards the ultimate prize – a bowl of milk.
The six-race card included the Pickled Pork Plate, Apple and Crackling Handicap Dash and the prestigious Glazed Ham It Up Cup. Sweeps and a Calcutta were held prior to each race with some spirited bidding for the right to ‘own’ the stars of the day – the beautifully attired and well trained piglets.
The event, organised by the Guyra Central School P & C, was a hit and exceeded expectations. P & C President Anita Hunter said that they were overwhelmed with the support from the community both in the lead up to the event and on the day.
“It was absolutely hilarious and everyone is saying how much they enjoyed it and hope it happens next year,” she said.
While the tally is yet to be finalised, Anita said the amount raised will be close to $12,000 which will be used to purchase items for use by students at the school.
“We are already making plans for next year,” she said. “There are a few things we know we can improve on but overall we were extremely happy with the day and would like to thank the businesses who supported us and the community for coming along and making the day a great success.”
