The group is concerned that a proposal to establish a Rail Trail between Black Mountain and Ben Lomond will lead to the removal of the infrastructure and would mean the corridor would no longer be able to be used as a railway.

The STGNRG believe that he proposal to construct a cycle way on top of the existing corridor  seems to be pivotal on the whole line from Armidale to the NSW border being removed.

They are against the proposal from the New England Rail trail which they say ‘is clear in its intention to dismantle the line between Black Mountain and Ben Lomond.’  

The line was replaced with heavy gauge line (105lb) just prior to withdrawal of rail services and is considered to be in ‘new condition’ by current railway authorities. 

“We also believe rail lines will be needed in the future for freight and passenger use, particularly with the rising cost of transport - the loss of railway infrastructure will create a huge replacement expenditure to the State,” STGNRG Chairman Rob Lenehan said.

“The historic value of the line and infrastructure is significant with several stations and surrounds being heritage listed,” he added. “With the removal of the line the future maintenance of this infrastructure would be placed in serious doubt. Being built in the 1800’s there were huge engineering feats accomplished in its construction making the Great Northern Line unique.”

He stressed that the group is not opposed to the idea of a cycle way, however ‘are totally committed to the opposition of the dismantling of any line or infrastructure within the corridor - removal of the line would require extensive alterations to the permanent way rendering the corridor useless for any future railway usage.’
