In the first Smokin Jack, ridden by Kody Nestor, won by 1.8 lengths in the 950m Maiden Handicap to set the pace for the rest of the day. Even though he is trained by Craig Martin in Tamworth he is locally owned by Steve Burey, Shaun Turner, Jenny Hiscox and Janette Sturtridge .
This was his first start for the local syndicate who recently took up ownership of the 3 year old bay gelding and by the win in won’t be the last. Part owner Steve Burey said it was a great win.
“He led all the way,” Steve said. “Unfortunately due to work commitments we couldn’t be there but next time we will be.”.
In the fifth race five year old chestnut gelding Kingston Time got up to win by eight lengths in the Class 3 Handicap over 1600m. Trained by Paul Grills and ridden by Armidale jockey Geoffrey Snowden he chalked up Paul’s 12th win for the season.
“Snowy rode him to instructions, it was a beautiful ride,” Grills said. “I wasn’t surprised by his win but didn’t back him as he can be a bit hot and cold. Plus I knew my wife Angela would have her usual $5 each way and he was paying $31.”
Kingston Time is locally owned by Angela Grills, Michael Jackson Geoffrey Bell and Angela’s niece Renee Bourke from Armidale. Grills is looking to start Kingston Time next Tuesday at Tamworth.
