A $25,000 grant will assist Guyra Shire Council repair the Laura Creek Crossing on Longford Road and help restore the native fish population in the Gywdir catchment.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall made the announcement at the crossing on Wednesday with Guyra Shire Mayor Hans Hietbrink. The grant was part of $1.1 million NSW Government program to help 30 of the state’s recreational angling clubs, community groups, landholders and local councils to rehabilitate fish habitats.
“Guyra Shire Council put forward an excellent proposal and I was more than happy to lend my support,” he said.
“Council should be applauded for its initiative and quality of work as it was a highly competitive process with 71 applicants from across the state.”
The $25,000 project will see the existing pipe culvert for fish passage replaced with a fish friendly box culvert at a lower level of the creek to reduce head loss in the stream flow.
Council will also complete remedial work on the road crossing itself – the passageway will be cut out and replaced altogether which will improve the inlet conditions for the fish.
Mr Marshall said that it is an impressive project that will improve the areas fish habitats and ultimately produce more fish, but also improve the condition of the crossing for motor vehicles.
“The environs around Laura Creek are a wonderful feature of the Guyra Shire and this project will go a long way to increasing the local fish population.”
