As this was during school holidays, local schools participated in a range of activities during the last week of term. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities but by Australians from all walks of life.
The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. This year’s theme was Serving Country: Centenary and Beyond celebrating the commitment and service of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in conflict, peace-keeping missions and war.
On Wednesday, 25 June, K-12 students from Guyra Central School attended a special assembly where they acknowledged and congratulated the new Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG), Aboriginal Education award recipients and the winners of the art competition.
At the assembly, the school’s Aboriginal Dance Group, ‘The Jarjums’ perform two new dances. Principal Jo Burgess congratulated the students on a great performance with the help of Eunice Blair and Nikki Oehlers. The Jarjums were mentored by Shannon Smith and students from Duval High School.
At St Mary of the Angels Primary School the children listened to traditional and modern aboriginal legends and participated in aboriginal dancing. Senior and junior students worked together in small groups to produce artworks that are now on display at the school.
