Guyra came out in the first half to set the pace with the forwards controlling the game, and this resulted in the first try scored near the posts by Rob Ivey off a dominate scrum. Minutes later, with the forwards once again in control with their pick and drive, the students were forced onto the back foot and flanker Liva Sili scored his first try.
With a clean ball from the ruck, half back Anthony Dittman set the back line in motion with a quick pass to Jordan Burgess to open up the students’ defence line. This allowed the forwards to again set up a pick and drive to attack the students’ line for Liva Sili to crash over for his second try, the score board 19-0 in favour of Guyra.
Robb came back strongly from a set play to score a well-earned try to close the gap to 19-7. Guyra once again took up the challenge to advance into the students’ 22 metre zone with the forwards again in control for Rob Ivey to get his second try of the match, half time score 24-7 in favour of Guyra.
The second half both teams fought hard to gain the upper hand with the students scoring two tries and one to Guyra’s Vernon Horne who out paced the opposition down the side line to score under the posts. It was a well earned victory for the Ghosts with the final score Guyra 31 Robb 19.
Points went to Liva Sili 3, Rob Ivey 2, and 1 point each went to Beau Orchard and Anthony Dittman, players’ player went to Liva Sili.
In reserve grade Guyra recorded its first win of the season beating Robb 19 nil.
Guyra are to play Armidale Blues in the next two games back to back, the first at Moran Oval and next week’s clash at Glen Innes. With the points table being very close it’s vital that both grades continue to win games.
The Australian Rugby Union Development Officer for this area, Garry Walsh, will be taking training this Thursday night at Spook Park starting at 6pm and everyone is encouraged to attend. Garry was the head coach for the Pirates 1st grade team during their reigning premierships from 2009-2012.
