The 2013 Tour de Rocks raised over $250,000, about half of which went to funding for Cancer research and raising awareness.
Members of the Guyra team took time out from their training this week to visit Guyra Multi-Purpose Health Service (MPS) which will benefit from a $2170 donation.
The Guyra branch of Can Assist recently received $3000 to assist cancer patients in the community and the money donated to the Guyra MPS will be used to purchase items used in palliative care.
Kathie Marquardt from the Tour de Rocks committee said that they were pleased to be able to support the work being done at the Guyra MPS.
“We need to have choices right to the very end,” she said. “Choices which involve being able to stay in our home, being able to be cared for by people we love and to be in an environment that is safe, familiar and secure.”
“Chris and his team at the Guyra MPS are ensuring patients can have this choice - their hope is that they have the equipment and enough of it so their patients can stay at home and be surrounded by the people they love.”
Guyra team member Pip White said that the rewarding part, on a local level, is to see funds come back to our community who have supported their fundraising including their recent event at Rafters.
“It is said fundraising begins with FUN and that certainly was the case at Rafters on the 4th of April,’ Pip said.
“Ticket sales were slow and we were quite worried it was going to be a fizzer, but typically the Guyra community rallied and showed their generosity as $5000 was raised on the night.”
“Rafters supplied a sumptuous six course Degustation meal giving diners the chance to sample a wide range of tasty foods. We were very fortunate to have authentic Italian cuisine with Lapo coming in to make his fabulous Gnocchi.
“Coopers and Oatley Wines donated liquid refreshments for attendees to purchase and enjoy with their meals. Labour was donated by members of the Guyra mountain bike community who acted as cooks, waiters, bar staff and kitchen hands for the night.
“The success of the night can be pinned on the terrific donations and contributions made by James & Jenni Jackson, Rob & Mel Atkin, Boutique Beauty by Pip, High on Bikes , Linley Ryan, Perrottet family, Able Bodies, Guyra Scissors & Combs and Hairy Tales Comb True all donated items to the Charity Auction that was expertly conducted by Michael Jackson.
“Sincere thanks to the purchasers as well as those who participated in the bidding to make the Auction a huge success.
“Kirk’s IGA donated an impressive Easter Basket which provided a raffle that has been ongoing. Oatley Wines also donated some items for Lucky Door Prizes.
“You know you’ve got a good crowd when a table of diners conduct their own auction of unwanted prawns that made another $45.00 for the cause!!! Plenty of people were obviously ready for a night out as the stayers made it into the wee hours and the arm wrestling got going (with some surprising results).”
On Thursday April 24, the group will set off from Armidale bound for South West Rocks on mountain bikes. It will take three days to get there with overnight stops at Georges Creek Junction and Willawarrin. On ANZAC Day there will be a riverside Dawn Service and end the day with 2-up at the Willawarrin Hotel. It should be a memorable experience!
The Guyra Team consists of Jenni Jackson, Pip White, Darren Taylor, David Mills, Michael Kirk, Judi Wark, Ken Porter, Richard Burey, James Armitage, Tracey Maxwell and Kathleen Davey with the support team of Kirsten Porter, Fiona Smith, Lachlan Davey and Zoe Armitage. This year the Tour de Rocks will be joined by James Tobin and a Channel 7 Sunrise team who will be doing three live crosses each morning.
“Keep an eye out for us! We’ll have a bit of competition for TV time with Wills, Kate and George in the country,” Pip said.
