The second season of Continuous Cricket wrapped up with the Grand Final played at Lions Park on 2nd April between The Cookie Monsters and The HUB Youth Team. Over 60 players participated in this year’s competition and thanks are extended to all players for their participation. Healthy Highlanders also thanks team organisers Janelle Gaukroger and Cath Richardson – Cookie Monsters, Maare Foster – Hit & Miss, Kayla Turnham – Adrenalin, Tyrone Clough – Hub Youth Team, John McIlwain - Cockatoos and Jo Presnell – The Spinners. Wet weather caused a few postponements during the competition but with daylight savings we were eventually able to reschedule games and finish with a BBQ following the Grand Final.

The final was played between two very evenly matched teams with the HUB finishing first after the preliminary rounds and the Cookie Monsters a close second (being the only team to defeat the HUB in the preliminary rounds).
After the first Innings the Hub led the Cookie Monsters 44 runs to 41 with Jake Brazier and Peter Presnell starring for the Cookie Monsters with 10 runs each (batters have to retire when they score 10 runs), the HUB relied on 5 of their batters getting amongst the runs to set up their lead with Erin Hickey leading by example with 7, Tynia 10, Shane 8, Vinnie 6 and Busta scoring 7. The second innings knock saw Peter Presnell bag another 10 runs to be the leading scorer on the day. Mal Gaukroger and Jeff Richardson also found the middle of their bats with 10 runs each and the Gaukroger family contributing a further 16 runs with Janelle 6, Kasey 7 and Sophie 3 helping the Cookie Monsters to 52 runs and a score of 93. The HUB were chasing 50 runs for victory and Vinnie got the team off to a great start with a whirlwind 10 runs, Myles 10 and Tynia 5 and Busta 6 also got amongst the runs with Tyrone Clough scoring a classy 10 runs at the end of the innings to see the HUB equal their first innings score of 44 and fall 6 runs short of their target.
The impressive thing about the grand final was the way teams backed each other up in bowling and fielding and the great sportsmanship displayed by both teams. Congratulations to the Cookie Monsters on winning their inaugural Healthy Highlanders Mixed Sporting title. Healthy Highlanders is seeking expressions of interest from anyone wishing to convene Continuous Cricket in 2015. Continuous Cricket is a fitness based game which requires good team work, good hand eye coordination and a willingness to have a laugh. It’s a lot of fun … just ask the players who participated in this year competition.
Team entries are now open for Mixed Volleyball which will be played at the Guyra Community Hall on Wednesday evenings commencing on 30th April. Nominations close on 24th April with a maximum of 10 teams. For further details contact Steve Griffith on 67711019
