After a year off the Guyra Seniors Ball was back this year and was welcomed with a great deal of enthusiasm by more than 270 seniors and their carers who came from far and wide to attend.

Towns from across the region were represented including Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Inverell, Walcha, Uralla, Bingara, Warialda, Tamworth and Armidale.
The ball was organised by Guyra Shire Council Home and Community Care (HACC) Services and the Country and Western Theme provided a great opportunity for participants to dust off their boots and hats and get into character.
The Ball was officially opened by Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall who acknowledged the valuable contribution that seniors make in their communities.
“When problems arise I often seek out older residents for advice because quite often they have dealt with the same issues in the past,” he said.
Guyra Shire Council Mayor Hans Hietbrink was also in attendance along with councillors and senior staff who joined in the celebrations.
The highlight of the day was a performance by local Guyra boy and TAS student Andrew Knight who delighted with a solo performance of “Maria” which was followed by a song and dance item by the “Jets”.
Both items are from the upcoming production of “Westside Story” now in rehearsal and being staged by The Armidale School in association with NEGS, OCC and PLC.
Students from Guyra Central School and St Mary of the Angels were also part of the program of entertainment with song and dance items which were enjoyed by all.
Organisers Sally Burey and Wendy Warner said that the day would not be able to be held without the many volunteers who work to make the day a success.
“We would like to thank Bill Wicks who acted as MC for the day, Hazel Charles who provided the music and Peter Denovan for his singing,” Sally said.
“Behind the scenes the day owes much to the many people who worked to set up, cook and serve the meals for the large crowd. Mary Sisson and her enthusiastic team should be congratulated for their efforts.
“They were assisted in the serving and clearing up by students from Guyra Central School, which was a great effort.”
The culmination of the day activities was the crowning of the Cowboy (Geoffrey Hume, Tamworth) and Cowgirl (Sheila Sewell, Guyra) of the Ball.
