Green waste disposal creates

18 Dec, 2009 12:46 PM
I am writing in regards to the consequences of our council’s decision to charge for disposal of green waste.

All over the Guyra town area there are significant numbers of “Chilean needle grass” in common areas such as parks, along road sides as well as in resident’s yards. With this being a ‘noxious weed’ it is our responsibility to control it.

The decision to charge for this service has already seen a dramatic increase in clippings and green waste being disposed of out on the routes, and along our rural roadsides.

The majority of rural landowners control their weed problems. This control is a never ending issue that comes at a considerable cost. The last thing we need is more ‘noxious weeds’ growing outside our boundaries, as it is guaranteed that this green waste and clippings will contain needle grass and other noxious weeds.

It seems that the only control that council undertakes is mowing and slashing these weeds, which only increases the spread and puts further financial pressure on the rural landowners. This choice of ‘weed control management’ taken by council is only sending the message that there are rules for landowners and different rules for government bodies.

Why should we be worried about controlling ‘noxious weeds’ as it is obvious that our council does not!
