Fun times on Bowling greens

28 Oct, 2008 11:45 AM
Not as many for Wednesday bowls as has been (weather is great) so come on down and bend your elbow for drinks and bowls. Winners for the day were Fred (Two Bob) Geldof and John (Turtle) Jackson with two wins and 18 ends.

Saturday was APJ Golf and Bowls day (I have no results) by all reports this definitely was a fun day, with some people making clowns of themselves and others playing with the seat out of their pants. (Fancy dress as witnesses know) Great to see people having fun.

One a more serious note Club Singles were played on Sunday. In Minor Singles W Reeves and D Lewis played off and after 10 ends the score was 8-6 to Wayne, he skipped away further to lead by 24 all after 22, and then 28-16 before eventually winning by 31-22 after 33 hard fought ends.

In Major Singles D Smith and A Bull went out to do battle and a battle it was, after 15 ends it was 11 apiece and after 27 ends the score was 24-23 to Dale. This as where Dale put his foot down (as teachers do) to string five ends together on the trot and in doing so defeated Bubby by 31 shots to 23.

The next game of Major Singles was between G Reeves and L Lawer, this was a marathon, with 42 ends needed to produce a victor, and on no less than 10 ends the scores were equal. 1’s and 2’s were the order of the day, with only one of 3, being tallied and this was on the 37th end. Shame that there had to be a loser (Sorry Geoff) Len being the winner 31-30 (the real winner, of course was bowls).

Next to play were B Campbell and R Lockyer in Open Singles, at the end of end 9 the score was 9-6 in favour of Barry, he stretched the lead a tad, but Ron came back, but after the dust had settled, the final score was 31-17 to Barry.

The other match of Open Singles was played out between S Campbell and M Bull, after 19 ends Scott was behind 12-13, this was where Matthew put the foot on the pedal, winning eight ends straight, to take the match 31-13.

In Club Fours P Kliendienst, A Sparke, P Brodbeck and J Young took on M Bourke, G Burgess, S Youman and A Youman after seven ends the score was 7-6 in favour of Buddha, Burgo, Slow Poke and Joel. After end 13 the score was 13-13 and we were playing on rink 13 (lucky for some, unlucky for others). Klieny, Sparkey, Rabbit and the Young fellow, won the next eight ends, finishing with a 29-13 victory.

Another game of Fours was contested this being D Butler, J Souter, F Kennedy and A Butler up against E Kennedy, B Stanley, S Brazier and C Stanley. Col and his band of merry men jumped score at one stage, being 11 zit. Anthony and his boys (?), came back but it was too late. Score being 28-16.

Championship games set for Sunday October 26, 1.30pm start. Umpire and starter Dale Smith.

Triples: B Presnell, A Bull, M Bull to play E Sole, D Campbell, and R McLeod.

Pairs: F Kennedy and A Butler v S Beechey and L Adams. D Wilcox and L Lawer v S Campbell and S Sole.

Open Singles: J Souter v B Sole, marker D Smith.

Just a reminder: East Maitland travelling bowls will be here this weekend. Any local bowls interested the format will be.

Friday evening, Twilight bowls (see club for times)

Saturday after, Mufti 1.30pm start. No cost to play. Barbecue tea afterwards at a cost of $8.

Sunday morning another roll up and breakfast at a cost of $10.

Presentation of prizes will then be made, before the travelers head home at about 11am.

On the notice board is a sheet asking any member of the club interested in taking part in Wednesday Twilight Bowls. If so could they please put their names on the sheet before November 3. Starting time will be 6.pm. A minimum of 16 players required for a start. Cost is $4.00 per player each night and partners will be drawn prior to each nights play. Play will be over six weeks and the winners for each night will drawn out of the winner’s cards. This will be for a voucher.

So come down and enjoy an evening of relaxation and friendship along with a game of bowls.
