There were no club championships played over the weekend as a result of the New England District fours play at Guyra. There were three Guyra teams entered in this competition along with four teams from Armidale City, two teams from Armidale Ex Services and one team from Walcha.
Saturday morning January 30: Scott Campbell, Steven Sole, Barry Presnell and Boyd Stanley played Ces Davis and team from Armidale Ex Services. Scott and his team defeated Ces and team 17 – 16 over 21 ends.
Wayne Reeves, Chris Kliendienst, Dan Kennedy and Phil Kliendienst also played Saturday morning when they played Steve Goodwin’s team from Walcha and defeated them 23 – 17 over 21 ends.
Saturday afternoon saw Scott Campbell and team play Richard Clutterbuck and team from Armidale City and defeat them 28 – 26 over 21 ends. Phil Kliendienst and team played P Bullen and team Armidale Ex Services and defeat them 31 – 13 over 21 ends.
K Hunt and team Armidale City 20 – 19 over 21 ends, narrowly defeated David Wilcox, Ivil Reid, Geoff Reeves and Andrew Sparke.
After the two rounds were played Saturday two of the three Guyra teams advanced to the Semi Finals to be played Sunday January 31.
In the Semi Final Sunday morning Dan Kennedy and team defeated T Fuller and team Armidale City 17 – 16 over 21 ends. Scott Campbell and team defeated K Hunt and team Armidale City 26 – 11 over 21 ends. This put the two Guyra teams into the Final Sunday afternoon. After the Semi Final was played and from information passed on to me by bowlers in the club it could be the first time that two Guyra teams have played each other in the final of the District Fours or any other District game for that matter.
Sunday afternoon supporters and spectators alike saw a special game of bowls played. It was a privilege to sit and witness this auspicious occasion. Both Scott and Dan and their teams set about claiming the mantel of District Fours Champions for 2010. Dan and his team won the first five ends opening a lead of eight shots, Scott then opened his account winning two ends of the next eight ends. Dan by this stage had opened his lead to 15 – 4 after 13 ends. This is when the big turnaround kicked in and Scott and his team made a game of it and by end 20 the score was Dan 17 and Scott 16. With only one end left to play the title of District Fours Champions for 2010 was in the balance. With only a couple of bowls left to play and Dan and his team holding one shot the pressure was on for Scott to either draw or run off the shot to win the game, he gave it every chance and narrowly missed resulting in a win for Dan 18 – 16 over 21 ends.
The District Fours Champions for 2010 are Wayne Reeves, Peter Brodbeck (sub) for Phil Kliendienst, Chris Kliendienst and Dan Kennedy.
Runners Up: Boyd Stanley (Sub) for Col Stanley, Barry Presnell (Sub) for Barry Campbell, Steven Sole and Scott Campbell. BOTH TEAMS FROM GUYRA.
To top off a great weekend for the Guyra Club, one of our Junior Bowlers Braden Sole played the Junior District Singles at Armidale Ex Services and he to came away the victor, making him the Junior District Singles Champion for 2010.
Congratulations to all the Guyra bowlers on their success.
