Junior League

29 Jun, 2009 02:53 PM
On Saturday June 20, Guyra Junior Rugby League travelled to Inverell for our second Gala Day and played against Inverell Easts. Guyra were fortunate enough to win 3 out of 5 games, which is a terrific effort against any Inverell team. It was very pleasing to hear how well all our teams played. Our Under 12s played a really tough game, and our Under 10s played extremely well considering they were very short on players on the day. We would love to sign a few more boys for the Under 10s before registrations close on June 30. These boys have had only one loss despite being short on numbers.

This week’s games are in Uralla at Woodville Oval. Times are as follows: Field 1-Under 8s at 9am, Field 2 - Under 10s at 9.45, Field 1 - Under 12s at 9.45, Field 1 - Under 14s at 10.30, Field 1 - Under 16s at 11.15.

Could all players please be at the ground at least 30 minutes before your game, as Senior League will follow our games and we must be finished on time.

Under 8s with Mick Mayled

This week we travelled to Inverell to play the Inverell Easts side. There was a big improvement in the team this week, with everyone playing extremely well. It was a high scoring game that saw us come away with a good win 44-32. Hopefully the kids can continue to play this well over the coming weeks.

Under 10’s with Jason Gee

The boys travelled to Inverell last weekend with only eight players, and one under eight year old Lleyton Gee, who played extremely well. The first half ended and we led 12-4.

In the second half the Inverell team had enough players to fill another side which made it very tough for our boys. We ended up going down 32-16.

David Quinlan had a very impressive game scoring four tries, Kieran Davis, Sebastian Gee, Nelson and Carson Oehlers backed up very well.

Under 12’s with James McCormack

I will start this weeks report by saying how impressed I was last Saturday with the effort shown by all players in our Under 12 team.

Our win over a much bigger Inverell East team 20 points to 4 would have to be our best game this year.

All players that have been attending training showed last Saturday that they are improving well with great defence and some outstanding draw and pass on show. Erick Klabe, Jaidyn Towells, Oliver White and Reece Handebo again lead the way for the forwards with Matt Cox playing his best game this season. Man of the match Jake Ellis and half back Ben Moffatt lead the team around the park well with Jake showing some great vision setting up at least 3 of our 5 tries. Out wide Ronald Vale and Cooper Blair were at times unstoppable scoring 4 tries between them, Ben McCormack had a great game with some good runs and solid defence in the centres. All in all it was a great team effort and a great win over Inverell.

This weeks game against Uralla will be all about improving on last weeks game.

Under 14s with Geoff Dowden

Guyra came to Inverell down on a few players but with enough to still field a full team. There were many positional changes across the park and to the credit of the whole team, everyone put their hand up and put in for each other. The forwards continued to lay the platform for the backs and Ricky Ellis was again in great touch in defence. Jake, Jy, Corey and Zach all put their hand up to share the workload in the forwards and there were plenty of points scored as a result of the great team effort from everyone. Well done boys and keep up the hard work at training and you will continue to enjoy scoring points and being in a position to win more games.

Under 16s sponsored by Suttos Shears coached by Darrin Towells

Despite having several players unavailable for the game our Under 16s faced a very strong Inverell Easts team and stuck it to them the whole game. Our Guyra boys showed toughness in defence especially on our line and I am sure the Inverell boys woke up sore on Sunday morning. A couple of silly mistakes and failure to control the ball at vital parts of the game, cost us the game 24-12 in the final score. Of this our own mistakes contributed to 4 tries for Inverell, thus illustrating to the boys the importance of not pushing silly passes and getting our completion rates right. This is a terrific bunch of boys and with continued hard work at training I am sure we will win a lot of games of league before the season is out.

Best on the park for the day was - Ty Archibald, Brandon Pillar and Ben Kirk. I would like to thank Scott McLeod for his valued assistance on the day, It was greatly appreciated.
