Saturday January 23 saw three club games played and all games were keenly contested.
THE GAME IS NEVER OVER UNTIL IT IS OVER, a saying that nearly rang true for Steven Sole this weekend.
In Open Singles Steven Sole played David Wilcox in a game that had two distinct halves; early in the game Steven closed David right out of the contest opening up a lead that had the feeling of a very short game. David however stuck to his game plan and set about reversing the one sided score sheet. Steven at one stage reeled off eight straight ends to lead 18 nil, this score line only served to spur David into action and try he did only to see the score blow out to 30 – 8 after 20 ends. This is where the game became interesting David put his head down and reeled off a winning sequence of his own winning the next 14 ends closing the score to 30 – 25 in Stevens favour. Steven eventually scored the one shot he thought that he was never going to get to run out winner 31 – 25 over 35 ends.
In Club Pairs Phil Kliendienst and Adam Bennett had a narrow escape when they defeated Barry Presnell and Andrew Sparke 20 – 19 over 21 ends. Either team going on the scorecard could have won this game. Right from the onset the scores remained close, first one team would gain the ascendency then the other this remained the status quo up until the last end, with Barry and Andrew wanting four shots to draw the game and force another end they could only manage three resulting in the narrowest of wins to Phil and Adam.
Also in Club Pairs those that watched the game, when Ivil Reid and Geoff Reeves defeated Barry Walls and Wayne Reeves witnessed another close game. The scores in this match up were to and fro throughout the game, on no less than five ends the scores were even. On end 20 Barry and Wayne wanted two shots to win the game only to have Ivil draw the ultimate shot, Barry was unable to shift the shot bowl to secure the two shots wanted and went down 22 – 19 0ver 21 ends.
Sunday January 24 saw a small but enthusiastic field of bowlers play in the Norm Reeves Memorial Charity Day. 12 bowlers braved the weather conditions to have a very enjoyable afternoon of bowls. After two rounds of 15 ends of bowls the winners were John Jackson, Darren Kennedy and Pavie Walls with two wins plus five shots. The runners up were Chris Kliendienst, Ron McLeod and Andrew Sparke with one win plus three. The proceeds of the day were in aid of Diabetes Australia.
There will be no Club Championships this weekend because of the District Fours being played at Guyra.
Bowlers that entered this competition are asked to check the notice boards for starting times. The competition will commence at 9.30am, good luck to the three teams from Guyra.
So until next week good bowling and good health.
