The depth of the Guyra Rugby club was to be tested once again with three absences being filled and an injury in the first ten minutes. Guyra won both grades against Baa Baa’s but at a huge cost as Guyra’s NSW Country prop was red carded after an altercation in the last minutes of the game at Moran oval Armidale.
Guyra scored early as Korie Paio sliced through to score under the posts. Rob Ivey went in next after some good old fashioned mauling from the ghosts pack. Matt Turner scored after a long and deceptive run. Guyra’s scrum was lethal as usual but the Baa Baa’s lineouts proved troubling to the ghosts as the Guyra lineout performed well below its usual high standard. Despite this James Walker scored a superb try from an Arnold Greenfield kick and So,o Mulu crossed after some great lead up work from the Ghosts back line. Jason Rolff also kicked 3 conversions. The Baa Baas scored late to bring the full time score to 31-8. Best for the ghosts were Rob Ivey who had a brilliant game, Korie Paio, James Walker and Justin Heffernan
“We can do so much better than that performance,” remarked Guyra hooker Dan Brown. “They out enthused us and we did not run onto the field in the proper frame of mind. Baa Baa’s played really well and the game was much closer than the score showed.”
Guyra Reserve grade flexed its muscle with a 50-7 victory. The highlight was a three try haul from rugby fledgling Rod Lawlor. Again with a cast of many the Ghosts reserve grade was without players supplied to first grade, but had enough player depth to be successful and have a full bench. Best for Guyra were Beau Orchard, Tom Schaefer, Big Dog and Brodie Baxter.
This weekend Guyra host Robb College at Guyra Rugby Park. The day is brought to you by Highland Hire Mechanical Repairs and local band ‘Mud Bucket’ are live at the Royal Hotel that evening.
A special mention must be made of Jock Waters son of Grant and Peta Waters. Jock has been selected in the under 15’s NSW country side at flanker. Also Jaidyn Towells has been named in the PSSA side also at flanker. Well done to the boys and their families.
