Over 50 people attended the annual Rotary Pride of Workmanship award ceremony on Wednesday, October 21 and celebrated as eight great workers in Guyra were recognised.
The Pride of Workmanship Award Scheme has been run by the Rotary Club in Guyra over the past six years highlighting the great work of many employees and thus resulting in a sense of pride on the part of the awardees as well as their supervisors.
Rotary is a worldwide organisation of business and professional people that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.
Rotary Clubs undertake service projects under four main themes – Community Service (e.g. Christmas Parade and Carnival), International Service (e.g. fighting Polio and Malaria and assisting a school in Tanzania and hospital in Vanuatu), Youth Service (e.g. student exchange, RYAG and the Youth Leadership Award) and Vocational Service which is where the Pride of Workmanship program fits in.
This year’s award program was organised by Rotary’s Director of Vocational Service, Tessa Capsanis who said: “Members of Rotary believe ‘Pride of Workmanship’ – the sense of responsibility to do a job well and exceed expectations is one of the greatest assets that people working in our town can bring to building our community and making our town a better place to live.
“It is not a competition for the best employee - rather it celebrates a job well done and it is a recognition by the business owner, the customers or clients, other businesses and members of our community of the important contribution made by the awardee.”
The awards dinner was addressed by Mayor Hans Hietbrink, who thanked Rotary for giving employers in Guyra the chance to publicly acknowledge the great work of their employees.
Guest speaker for the evening was Mr Bill Miller, Distribution Manager for the New England Credit Union. Bill remarked that Guyra was proving to be one of the fastest growing business centres for the Credit Union thanks to the go-ahead atmosphere in the town and the great work of NECU’s local staff.
He then discussed those elements in a business that are fundamental to employees building great and productive relationships with their co-workers, management and clients. In particular he commented on the importance of open communications, an honest and consistent approach and a sense of shared purpose.
Awards were presented by Mayor Hans Hietbrink as each award citation was read out by Tessa Capsanis.
Awardees in 2009 were: Kathleen Davy (Guyra MPS), Wilma Reeves (Guyra Central School), Leanne Wright (Jobs Australia), Elizabeth Starr (Highland Petfood), Donna Davidson (Bald Blair School), Maureen Cox (Guyra MPS), Jaunita Landsborough (Shiralee Motel) and Rhonda Youman (Café Blackboard).
Kathleen Davy spoke on behalf of all the awardees and thanked the supervisors and business owners who had nominated them, the Rotary Club for undertaking the program and their families for that all important home support.
