Super working bee at MPS

16 Feb, 2010 10:40 AM
Community spirit is alive and well in Guyra, with dozens of volunteers set to gather at the town’s Multi Purpose Service for a ‘super’ working bee.

The working bee will be held on Monday March 1, with a number of projects on the to-do list including spreading mulch, dividing plants and replant areas of the garden.

The working bee is expected to attract a range of willing workers, including representatives from the Guyra Gardening Club, MPS volunteers, school students from St Mary of the Angels, and also maintenance men and senior management from Hunter New England Health.

A barbecue lunch will be held during the event, to thank community members for their efforts during the day.

Acting Guyra MPS Health Service Manager Felicity Wardle said the level of community support directed towards the MPS was always genuinely appreciated.

“Many hands make light work, and no matter what the occasion, there always seems to be dedicated community members waiting in the wings to assist the MPS whenever needed,” Ms Wardle said.

Ms Wardle, as well as Tablelands Cluster General Manager Wendy Mulligan, will be amongst those donning their gardening overalls and getting their hands dirty during the super working bee.

Prior to the working bee, overgrown flax plants will be removed from the MPS gardens, making way for more appropriate plants and shrubs. Community members can buy the advanced flax plants for $5 each. The money raised will be then be redirected to purchasing more appropriate plants for the garden. Phone 6738 4000 to place an order.

“Any donations of newspaper and non-synthetic carpet/underlay would be most welcomed, and can be delivered to the Guyra MPS. These will be used as weed retardant,” Ms Wardle said.

“Donations of new plants would also be gratefully accepted, especially low-maintenance ground covers, native and climate-appropriate plants that could be used to enhance the gardens of the Guyra MPS. All donations will be gratefully received and properly planted at the MPS.”

All volunteers are encouraged to bring their own garden equipment including wheel barrows, tools, etc to enable them to assist fully.
