Severe lightning storm cuts power supplies

09 Feb, 2010 02:20 PM
Country Energy crews were kept busy around Guyra and other parts of the New England last week with electrical storms causing interruptions to the power supply.

The energy providers “Storm Tracker” website service reported several thousand lightning strikes during the height of the storm.

Approximately 3,800 customers in the New England North West experienced an unplanned power interruption on Thursday, most being due to direct lightening strikes to the power network.

Country Energy brought in additional crews and additional equipment to ensure power was restored to those affected as quickly as possible, this included the hiring of a bulldozer and helicopter.

Acting regional general manager for Country Energy, Peter Hyde, said in his 33 years of working in the industry the damage caused by this lightening storm to the power network was one of the most wide spread he had seen.

“The large number of customers affected within a single hour meant that some customers experienced lengthy delays in reporting power interruptions, I sincerely apologise to these customers, and thank them for their patience,” Peter said.

Country Energy recommends that you do not use electrical appliances or wired telephones during a severe storm, and unplug sensitive equipment such computers and televisions.

“Keeping people safe is our top priority and customers can be assured that if power is cut because lightning strikes Country Energy’s network, our crews will be out working to get the power back on safely and as quickly as possible.

Country Energy reminds residents to stay well clear of fallen powerlines, and to report them as soon as possible to 13 20 80 to ensure the safety of people in the area.
