SES StormSafe Tips to Prepare for Storm Season

14 Sep, 2009 05:26 PM
As part of annual StormSafe Week, the State Emergency Service is urging the public to prepare now for storm season, which commences on the first of October.

Storms are the most costly natural disasters to affect the community. In New South Wales alone they cost on average $217 million annually.

SES Commissioner Murray Kear said that there are simple actions which can improve public safety and help reduce the impact of storms.

“Severe storms cause significant damage to communities in New South Wales each year,” he said.

“This can include damage to roofs, shedding and pergolas from fallen trees and branches, smashed roof tiles and windows from hail, and water damage caused by torrential rain and flash flooding.”

“Taking simple actions now can help minimise damage and protect you and your household.”

StormSafe actions include:

• Clearing gutters, downpipes and drains of leaves and debris

• Trimming branches that overhang buildings, carports and pergolas where safe to do so and permitted by the local council

• Keeping your roof in good repair

• Ensuring that items easily blown by wind such as toys, trampolines and garden furniture are put away ahead of expected storms

• Listening to your local radio station for information, updates and advice when storm warnings are broadcast

• Preparing an Emergency Kit which includes a torch, portable radio, spare batteries, first aid kit and emergency contact numbers

For emergency assistance in storms, call the SES on 132 500. In life-threatening emergencies call 000.
