 Services tested as trike ‘derailed’

Services tested as trike ‘derailed’

18 Mar, 2010 09:29 AM
“Carnage” is the best way to describe the events of Saturday afternoon the 6th March on the train line south of town along Lagoon Rd.

Fortunately for all involved this was an “exercise” attended by all the Guyra Emergency Services.

When Emergency Services arrived at the incident they were confronted with a motor vehicle on its side and the “trike” derailed from the rail line with smoke billowing from the vehicle and multiple victims involved.

The exercise was conceived as a result of a requirement of the Guyra Antique Machinery groups need to provide an emergency plan as part of their accreditation to operate on the rail tracks in Guyra.

This exercise provided a practical learning experience and refresher for the volunteer and retained Emergency Services like the VRA, SES, RFS and NSW Fire Brigades and as expected they all performed faultlessly, something they and the whole community can be proud.

Emergency workers on this occasion were exposed to a multi-victim situation with a total of 10 patients involved with injuries including multiple fractures, amputation, head injuries, 1 patient unconscious, 1 patient with spinal injuries and 2 patients trapped in the wreckage.

All the Emergency Services had the opportunity to utilize their equipment and skills relevant to their emergency roles with emphasis on all working together to achieve a common goal.

Thanks needs to be conveyed to all Emergency Services for their participation including Guyra VRA, NSW Fire Brigade, Guyra and Uralla SES, Rural Fire Service, NSW Police and Ambulance Service of NSW.

Thank you also to Bob Vidler, Ron Lockyer and Guyra Antique Machinery group and John Miller for photographing / videoing the exercise for continued training purposes.

This exercise and its realism would not have been possible without the efforts of the people who played the role of our victims.

Community minded volunteers are continually being sought by volunteer emergency services like the VRA, SES, and Rural Fire Services.
