Out and About
I have been very busy on community events over the last few weeks. The General Manager and I welcomed the Lions International District Governor and the Guyra Lions Club President Jim Betts and his wife to Council to discuss the role of service clubs in the community.
My wife and I were the Official Guests at the “Can Assist” Ball held at Guyra Community Hall on 25th September 2009.
Councillor Vickery, the General Manager and I attended the Police Remembrance Day service at Guyra Catholic Church.
I represented Guyra at the graduation ceremony at the University of New England at Armidale on 9th October 2009.
Councillor David McRae and I attended the official opening of the Baldersleigh Rural Fire Service October 10 2009.
I have also attended a number of Council and Australia Day Committee meetings and also meetings with a Property Developer to discuss options around the proposed Manse Street Subdivision.
Manse Street Subdivision.
Council has submitted a grant application to the NSW government for infrastructure funding in the form of an interest free loan. Our local member, Mr Richard Torbay has offered strong support to secure this grant and assist Council to open up some much needed residential land. Council proposes to build a quality residential estate with underground services to over fifty blocks. There has already been strong interest in housing sites and we look forward to publishing expressions of interest for the blocks shortly.
Rotary Park
We have our new bus shelter and amenities block up and running and the playground is taking shape. Council hopes to complete the landscaping and furniture installations (including an electric barbeque) shortly. Council is in the process of finalizing quotes for new shade sails over the playground area and when these are erected there will be a new fence erected around the playground area for the safety of the children.
Guyra Markets.
Our new Guyra Markets are proving to be a success with more stall holders participation at each event. We are getting a lot of visitors travelling through Guyra who stop for a refreshment break at our markets, and also many locals visiting and participating in the stalls and the Car Boot Sale. Last Sunday we had some very good fresh vegetables stalls, including our own Guyra Truss Tomatoes, and the two plant stalls were seen to be doing a roaring trade and were nearly sold out of all plants by the finish of the markets. The Markets’ rumour was the Tomato plants were one of the fastest selling items! Mal and Laraine Leyland’s stand was also doing a brisk trade in their very delicious home made cakes and biscuits. Remember the car boot stall is a great way to raise some much needed cash and also clear out those sheds and cupboards. I look forward to seeing you all there for the next Market on Sunday December 6 2009 .
Guyra Looks to a Partnership with
Armidale Shire Council.
Council is continuing to work with Armidale Council to negotiate terms of an agreement to share a General Manager. The aim is to produce further efficiencies and build on the strengths of the Alliance. Council held an extraordinary meeting on Friday the 30th and negotiations are continuing which will enable us to get on with the business of selecting a General Manager to take both Councils forward.
