2012 has been proclaimed the National Year of Reading, with the official launch taking place on February 14. The National Year of Reading is about children learning to read and keen readers finding new sources of inspiration.
This is an ideal time to take advantage of the many services offered to the community by the Guyra Shire Library.
The new Library premises were officially opened in November 2011. Regulars users have been quick to take advantage of the improved facilities and librarian Bronwen Clark is keen to see more Guyra Shire residents come through the doors.
The library has a large range of books suitable for all ages, including special needs. This ranges from children’s board books suitable for toddlers to large print and talking books suitable for the visually impaired.
“Many people aren’t aware of what we have available,” said Bronwen. “As well as books, you can borrow DVD’s, Cd’s and magazines.”
“The library also provides free internet and WiFi access,” she said. “You can connect to on line resources such as ‘Your Tutor’, ‘World Book Online’ and other databases.”
The new library premises has enabled library hours to be extended with the help of council staff. Between 1pm and 2pm the library remains open, however only limited services are available. Books may be borrowed and internet access is available, however during this period books will need to be checked out with council staff through the hatch which is located near the children’s area.
While Bronwen often remains on the premises she asks that users take note of the signs on the counter and direct their enquiries to council staff.
As part of the National Year of Reading, Guyra Shire Library users are being encouraged to add a ‘petal’ with their favourite books written on it to make up flowers which will be displayed in the library.
