Guyra Home and Community Care (HACC) have started the new year in new premises, after relocating from the MPS to the old library building. Co-ordinators Wendy Warner and Sally Burey are hoping the more central location will see an increase in the number of people using the service. HACC provides social support and services for the frail, aged and disabled. They cater for 200 community based clients in Guyra, a further 100 in Tingha and coordinate a large group of volunteers to help meet their needs. This can be as diverse as Meals on Wheels, transport, day care, shopping, paying bills, lawn mowing and home visits.
“The new building offers more flexibility to meet our clients needs,” said Wendy.
“It is our home and we can choose to use it in a variety of ways without restrictions.”
“Because it is more centrally located we anticipate more people will feel free to drop in and make use of our services, or simply enjoy a cuppa or a chat.”
Before moving the building received a makeover with fresh paint, new carpet and installation of a disabled toilet. There is a dedicated area for craft and they hope to install a commercial kitchen when funds allow.
The premises have received the thumbs up from some of their regulars and volunteers who attended the Day Centre program on Wednesday. And it seems it is the little things that make a difference - like freedom to come and go, no hospital smells, being able to make a noise and just having a place they can call their own.
An Open Day is being planned for February 9. The centre will be open from 1pm to 3pm on that day to allow the wider community to call in and see the changes that have taken place.
It is a busy time for HACC who are also preparing for their annual Seniors Ball and Entertainment Day which will take place on March 5. Held every March, it brings together seniors from all over the region including Tamworth, Walcha, Uralla, Armidale, Glen Innes, Tenterfield Emmaville, Bundarra and Inverell.
Starting from 10am there will be morning tea, lunch, dancing, raffles and the announcement of King and Queen of the ball. Bookings are essential and tickets need to be pre purchased.
HACC opens from 9-3pm Monday to Wednesday and 9-1pm on Thursday. For more information about their services, the Seniors Ball or Open House contact Wendy and Sally on 6770 7127.
