He has worked, serving predominantly Aboriginal communities, in a number of the State’s country locations including Wilcannia, Tibooburra, Guyra, Walgett and Brewarrina. He was appointed to the rank of Sergeant in 1996 before fulfilling his dream of returning to Bourke, his hometown, where he is currently the Licensing Officer for the Darling River Local Area Command.

Sergeant Williams is the first Aboriginal officer from NSW to receive the Australian Police Medal. He has a strong link with the community in Bourke as it is the hometown of his tribe, the ‘Ngemba’.

Sergeant Williams carries on a strong family heritage working with his community. His grandfather was Tracker Sergeant Frank Williams, who was also raised in the Bourke community and worked as a tracker with the local police in the early 1900s.

Sergeant Williams’ grandfather received the Imperial Service Order Medal during his career, before retiring in 1950.

“I am honoured to be the recipient of this award and would like to thank everyone who I have worked with more than 20 years of policing, for their ongoing support,” Sergeant Williams said.
