Feeding the masses

25 Jan, 2010 01:04 PM
At the halfway point, the Guyra Lamb and Potato Festival is continuing to build on the success of previous years. Record numbers of people turned up on the first weekend of the festival to sample the produce served up by a contingent of volunteers from a range of local organisations.

This years festival was officially opened by Nationals Senator John Williams who took a ride on the newly reinstated trike which he helped get back on the track after a hiatus of eight years. The rides along the disused railway line have proved a hit with visitors and locals alike with 500 passengers over the weekend and many more lining up throughout the week.

The festival is a regular stop for many visitors travelling to the Tamworth Country Music festival, but is also a destination in its own right. Busloads of visitors arrive daily from nearby towns to take in the sights, have a lamb and potato meal and visit the stalls on the highway as well as the local shops.

The increased trade has kept some shopkeepers busy with visitors outnumbering the locals on some days. Stallholders from the festival site are among those who have taken the opportunity to make puchases from local businesses.

The action continues this weekend with the antique machinery display and swap meet, static displays of cars of interest, hydrangea display, dahlia show and non stop entertainment.
