School students from both Guyra Central School and St Mary of the Angels donned gloves and armed with large bags ventured out to make acontribution to the Clean Up Australia Day campaign.
The primary group from Guyra Central, who were supported by volunteer parents and grandparents did an amazing job cleaning up the school grounds and immediate area. Secondary students from Year 7 and 8 were transported out to Elm Street and Starrs Road where they collected a huge amount of litter.
Many thanks to Joseph George for supplying a bus to transport the students to and from the clean up location.
Younger students from St Marys cleaned the school and parish grounds while the older students cleaned the block around the school in both directions. This year, for the first time, volunteers were asked to sort rubbish in recyclables and other waste.
The clean up team found that the street scapes were very clean and tidy. Unfortunately, the park across the highway contained hundreds of glass and plastic bottles, mostly hidden beneath the trees and bushes.
Both schools received great support in organising this community activity from Geoff Dowden from Guyra Shire Council who supplied them with recycling guidelines, bags and for their continued support and coordination of this project.
