Australia Day in Guyra Shire

This year’s ambassador is Scott Brokenshire.

Scott Brockenshire is 30 years old and lives and works in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. He began swimming as a way of keeping fit when he was about 10 years old and competed in various competitions throughout his school life. He began seriously training as a Paralympic athlete in 1995 after watching the Victoria Commonwealth Games.

He has a long list of achievements already – Scott is no stranger to those Gold medals. Brockenshire is currently ranked 2nd in the world for 50m Freestyle, 3rd in the world for 100m Freestyle and is the current holder of 5 Australian Records.

Scott will be the guest speaker at the Australia Day Dinner and Awards presentation at the Guyra Bowling and Recreation Club on Monday 25 January, 2010. Tickets will be on sale at Council until 4pm, Thursday January 21, 2010 and the cost will be $25 adults, $15 children under 12.

The Tingha Community breakfast and awards presentation will be held at the Tingha Sport & Recreation Club from 8.00am. Tickets $10 and can be collected from Audrey McArdle on 67 233 361.

The Australia Day Flag raising ceremony and address will take place at Rotary Park, from 12 midday on Tuesday January 26.

There will be free entry to the Guyra swimming pool on Australia Day, with the inflatable pontoon in use during the day. The inflatable can only be used by children that can swim unassisted in the big pool.

The 0utdoor movie experience returns this year but will be held at new location at Leggo Park, behind the Council Civic Centre on Friday January 22. The New England Credit Union ‘Movies in the Park,will be showing Open Season 2 on Friday January 22 and Night at the Museum, Battle of the Smithsonian on Saturday January 23. The features will commence at around 8pm each evening. Both movies are PG rated and are suitable for all ages.

If weather is inclement the movies will be held at the Guyra community hall.

For the first time “Movies in the Park” will also be held at Tingha on Friday January 29 at the Tingha Sport & Recreation Club - Night at the Museum, Battle of the Smithsonian commencing around 8pm.
