Two teams in cricket finals
18 Mar 10 | Guyra Second Grade has finished second on the table after a first innings win over TAS on the weekend. After bowling TAS out for 201 on the opening day of the two day game, Guyra then gained first innings points on Saturday In the TAS innings five Guyra bowlers all got two wickets each Justin McKay 2-33, Jason Sharp 2-29, Charlie White 2-36, Matt Jackson 2-35, Mitchell Woods 2-38.
Clean up Australian Day
18 Mar 10 | School students from both Guyra Central School and St Mary of the Angels donned gloves and armed with large bags ventured out to make acontribution to the Clean Up Australia Day campaign.
18 Mar 10 | Tommy Raudonikis and Artie Beetson arrive in Guyra on Saturday April 10 to help raise funds to build the Guyra Sporting Complex. Born in Cowra Tommy played 204 games for the Western Suburbs Magpies, 37 games for the Newtown Jets, 24 State of Origin Games, 14 tests for Australia and Blues State of Origin coach. Tommy was awarded an OAM in 1982, Rothmans medal in 1972 and was voted into the team of the Century.
18 Mar 10 | The NSW Division of the Liberal Party has endorsed Guyra local, Scot MacDonald for the fourth position on their Legislative Council ticket in the March 2011 State election. The Liberal Party would realistically expect to win 7 or 8 positions, so Mr MacDonald’s spot is very likely to be successful.
High school students kick-start nursing careers
18 Mar 10 | Guyra’s Sally Burey is one of more than 30 forward-thinking high school students who will finish Year 12 with a nationally-recognised nursing qualification and a few extra dollars in their pocket, thanks to a unique initiative available through Hunter New England Health.
18 Mar 10 | A couple of years ago Pete Malcolm, Mick Kirk and myself decided that we would put together a race to raise money for the Rescue Helicoptor. The motivation was that a remote community like ours will rely on the helicopter to save us if we get into trouble – what better charity.
Light Horse train at Guyra
18 Mar 10 | Even though the weather was damp, 16 riders gathered at Guyra Showground for a Light Horse Training Weekend. Riders from Murrurundi, Bundarra, Warialda, Guyra and Toowoomba attended.
Services tested as trike ‘derailed’
18 Mar 10 | “Carnage” is the best way to describe the events of Saturday afternoon the 6th March on the train line south of town along Lagoon Rd. Fortunately for all involved this was an “exercise” attended by all the Guyra Emergency Services.
Dancing the day away
18 Mar 10 | The looks on the faces said it all. Guyra’s annual senior’s ball has once again proven that a day of dance, dining and social interaction is a recipe for a good time.
16 Mar 10 | Guyra Third Grade looking for a top two finish on the points table are well on their way to an outright win after a great first day against Centrals at Newling Oval in Armidale.
Jock gets an ‘Academy Award’
16 Mar 10 | THE Wests Greater Northern Academy honoured its best and brightest for 2009-10 after completing a clean sweep of its four games in Saturday’s tri-series against North Coast and Northern Rivers. Muswellbrook backrower Daley Boney and Guyra’s Jock Waters were the major award winners.
16 Mar 10 | Inverell enjoyed another pre-season tournament triumph on Saturday, winning the inaugural Guyra Royal Hotel Rugby 10’s. The Highlanders have taken out the annual Armidale Knockout on a couple of occasions and now they can add the Guyra 10s to their list after outlasting Robb College 1 in a Final that was forced into extra time.
High winds cause damage
16 Mar 10 | Guyra SES were called to a house in Ollera Street on Tuesday morning when a large tree fell on the roof of a house in blustery conditions.
Beauty services expand
16 Mar 10 | Expanded beauty services are available in Guyra with Emma McLennan now operating ‘Hands of Elegance’ from the premises of Boutique Beauty. Emma will specialise in acrylic nails and is keen to let everyone know she is open for business.
16 Mar 10 | It has become apparent, after a meeting of the Mayors and Deputy Mayors of Guyra, Armidale Dumaresq and Uralla, that the prospect of reaching a shared understanding on a way forward is almost a lost cause in the absence of a radical shift in thinking according to Guyra Mayor Hans Hietbrink.
16 Mar 10 | Edward Roy (‘Eddie’) Cockburn, originally from Guyra and a prominent advocate for Aboriginal rights and opportunities, died in Sydney on 25 February, aged 90. His funeral was held in Newcastle on 3 March.
All in a days work
16 Mar 10 | Guyra Health Service Manager Felicity Wardle and Tablelands Cluster Manager Wendy Mulligan joined school students, community members and other HNEH staff for a complete garden makeover at Guyra MPS on Monday.
New police officers for Guyra
16 Mar 10 | Police Minister Michael Daley received a warm welcome from police officers, the Mayor and General Manager when he visited the Guyra Police Station this week. Minister Daley, who has been Minister for Police since September last year, visited Guyra to learn about policing in a smaller rural station.
A morning with Shane Webcke
15 Mar 10 | Our first registration day was a huge success with many new players signing up in the lower age groups. Guyra Junior League thanks the Show Society and Brad and Ron Looker and family for arranging for Shane to come to our morning.
Archibald aims for New Delhi
15 Mar 10 | ABE Archibald is on a mission. He hasn’t even made the Australian boxing team yet, but he’s already boldly predicted he’ll be the first boxer to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games - starting in London in 2012.
